As a late-adopter to all things tech, I have a knee jerk reaction to the push to dive more into the metaverse. It seems like an escape from the present physical world. Why can’t people step away from their computers and really live? And then I had to stop myself and recall how fun it was to play on the Barbie website as a kid. If you didn’t have the same approach in your childhood, let me explain.

Barbie.com was a magical place. (The new Play Barbie website has nothing on it. Don’t waste your time. It is no comparison.) I could create my own Barbie character to my specifications. I got chose her name and what she looked like. I enjoyed creating my own persona in that world and dressing her in clothes my parents would never buy for me. I played games. I took her shopping. I got to be fun and creative in ways that I couldn’t in my real life.
Now, as I feel things have gone to far with this push to metaverse, I have implicate myself in that same drive. It is enjoyable to be creative without fear or restrictions. Yes, here are likely those who are fleeing to the metaverse to avoid this universe. Yes, there are greedy corporations enacting capitalistic aims. And yes, this place costs money and requires resources that many do not have. But if I look at it just on face value, as just another world to explore, it not longer seems so bad. As that little child who just wanted to explore who is now an adult with that same drive, maybe this metaverse is something I can discover in due time.
