After a poor attempt at a workout, I went to the shop next to the gym to order a recovery smoothie. (That was just the name, not that I needed much of a recovery based on the effort I put in, but that is neither here nor there.) I saw they also had salmon toast on the menu. I debated back and forth in the minute it took the cashier to come to the register.
“Can I get a recovery smoothie?”
“Is that it?”
“Uh, can I also get a salmon toast?”
Old me, that is the one who said those words, saw the $9.50 price tag for a piece of bread with decorations. New me, the reflective one, is considering the full benefits of the toast.

- Whole grain bread
- Smoked salmon
- Avocado
- Pickled red onion
- Lemon wedge
Taking it to be more than the sum of its pats, it was a treat that provided nutrition and a vote that I do deserve nice things. Would I/should I buy that daily or weekly? No, but that is true of most luxury purchases. After all your basic needs are met, then you splurge. I chose today on a whim to recognize myself as valuable and worthy to be treated as such. So, in that way, I am taking the focus off the salmon toast and placing the spotlight, for once, on me.
