Sustainable fashion needs to ask a different question

Last year at SXSW, I attended the panel, “Honest Marketing & Circularity.” The panelists were Logan Duran, of Tapestry, Anja Saddock of Trust Trace, Sigrid Buehrle of Adidas. During their time on stage, they introduced me to the concept of emotional durability. It is the idea of thinking beyond the materials themselves to the rate of fashion cycles and how long you want to have a particular item in your closet. So much of the sustainability efforts go to waste if the consumer is going to throw the clothing out after just one season anyway.

Which clothing items of yours have stood the test of time? What items of clothing have remained in your closet for years? Why do you want to keep them for so long?

I believe answering those questions is just as important as asking what a garment is made of.

What do you think makes an article of clothing emotionally durable?
