I listened to Jonathan Anderson say something so relatable to me. As he lay on the couch, during on the Fashion Neurosis podcast, he spoke on wanting to wear fashion more. Wanting, but not doing. This man, this year after year British Fashion Designer of the year. Former creative director of Loewe, responsible for designs like this.
And who is now creating designs like this for Dior
And yet he didn’t think he himself could wear the looks. Instead, with all the fashion at his disposal, he is more likely to found wearing Uniqlo, Levi’s, and his latest vintage find. He designs the clothes he wishes he could wear.
I find myself watching fashion show after show. I critique lines. I window shop. I examine textures. I am inspired by and want to be more a part of the fashion world. And yet, my closet would tell you none of that. Multiple reasons for that exist, but I ask myself the same question, “Can I pull that off?” But unlike him, I ask a follow-up: Does that mean I am not really into fashion?
And now, I can confidently answer back, “That’s not how that works.”
Being into fashion is about where you put your focus. It is about the conversations you have, the content you consume, and what you create. While I hope to play with fashion more in the future, that simply isn’t the life I’m living right now. So, I will watch as much of fashion week as possible and enjoy this hobby to the fullest.
