Timers and timers

At some point, I don’t know how, I happened upon an interval timer website. It was a godsend as a decided to do my work using it. After 15 minutes, I would take a break to scroll the websites I wanted and then get back in it the next 15-minute block started. I would play around with different lengths of working sessions mixed into a longer session. It helped me focus. Something clicks in my brain when I set a timer. It’s okay to ignore that text message. I can wait to watch the next video. I can push through the work because I will get a break eventually.

However, the productivity influencers would gasp. That’s a not a real pomodoro session. Pomodoro sessions should 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of rest. During the 5 minutes, you take your eyes off your screen. Others go up to 50 minutes of work. Some do a straight 3 hours of work. If I were serious about productivity that would be the route I should take. But I’m not serious about productivity. I am, however, serious about finding what works for me.

There is a lot of great advice out there, but I have to find what works for me. I am letting go of the idea that I have to do what others are doing exactly how they’re doing it. Shorter truly focused work times is much better than me quitting and spending the rest of the work day scrolling. Even if there is solid advice from credible sources, you have to battle test it in your own life.

What productivity tips have you tried? How have you modified them to fit your life?
