I spent some time stalking Raleigh, North Carolina on Google Maps. As I zoomed in, the spa appeared: The Umstead. And at that moment, I decided that I need to go there some day. It looks like a cozy retreat, with fine dining and a spa. Add a spacious room and there’s nothing else I need for a weekend away. Bonus: It’s part of the Fine Hotels program with American Express Platinum, meaning you get a slew of benefits just by booking through their travel portal.
For now, I’m still just window shopping the property, but one day I’ll make my way there. And that I must, because I keep being drawn in by the resort-like feel in an unexpected place. I don’t think I would have ever thought to add North Carolina to my travel wish list, but here I am wishing to be there.
As much as I look up places abroad to add on to my wish list, I am glad to add more retreats stateside. There are so many hotels across the United States that are easier for me to get to and with much cheaper flights. As I continue to lean into my desire to travel more, I continue to recognize just how much exploration I still have yet to do on these shores.
