I love this hand cream from Blue Lagoon. There’s just one problem.

Wandering through The Conservatory at Hudson Yards, I lingered in the bodycare section. Winter had taken its toll on my hands. I decided to try the hand cream from Blue Lagoon and then instantly made the decision to purchase it.

It’s a soothing cream that instantly makes my hands feel and look better. It’s not greasy. It doesn’t take forever to absorb. I enjoy using it, except now I rarely do. Today, we have another edition of good (great?) product, bad packaging.

Blue Lagoon Hand Cream

$45 for 1.7 oz

Comforting hand cream enriched with seawater from the Blue Lagoon

The cream is amazing. I want to take it everywhere I go. I want to leave it in my hand bag, but I won’t make that mistake anymore. Over time, as I squeezed the product out and touched the tube with my lotioned hands, that beautiful blue coating has worn away. No, I should say it flaked off.

I pulled out my black leather wallet to find blue speckles all over it. My years of watching detective cartoons helped me identify the culprit. It was the lotion. It had been shedding its blue coating all over items in my purse. I honestly think my wallet is ruined now. Maybe eventually the blue will come off, but for now it’s fused. Perhaps I could leave it on my desk or on my bedside table, but even then the flakes come off on to my hands. I don’t want to have to pick off paint flecks from my skin either.

It seems like they color code their tubes instead of having a standard color. It is likely cheaper to paint/coat the packages instead of coloring the metal the way all others seem to do. I’ve had other creams sold in aluminum tubes from differing price points. Never have I had this issue before. This is definitely a manufacturing issue and not one that will always happen with aluminum. (Surely you’ve never had a can of Coke flake on you, even if you crushed it in your hands.)

I don’t know if I will ever repurchase the hand cream. If somehow I am assured that this issue has been addressed, perhaps I will. However, I would love to use the hand cream and other products from the brand at The Blue Lagoon Resort, now that I know it exists. Fingers crossed I can do a review of that place in the coming years.
