A woman so beautiful she was scouted, from a single photograph. A woman who has already created such memorable runway moments. A woman who is beloved by the fashion obsessed. That woman, Anok Yai, has finally been awarded the honor of Model of the Year.
There are spaces that will probably go into the discourse on why she was possibly snubbed before, on the significance of this title. I am not creating that space right now. I just here to celebrate and reflect.
What is it like to have something you’ve worked hard for, something you truly want, dangled in front of you and kept out of reach. What is it like to be nominated for something 3 years running, only to watch that honor be given to others? It’s frustrating, so frustrating that Yai pleaded on social media to no longer be nominated. After all of that, all of the work you put in on the runway, in print media, on social media, then what is it like to finally receive the prize?
Congratulations, Anok
