Almost as quickly as Olivier Rousteing announced his exit from Balmain, the brand announced Antonin Tron as his successor. I have no idea how they were able to keep the rumor mill at bay on this one, but good job to the brand for being able to announce both bits of news on its own terms. Now, you might be wondering, who exactly is Mr. Tron.
Unlike Rousteing when he joined the brand, Tron comes seasoned with experience working on his own line after starting with other major French design houses. Whereas Balmain under Rousteing became known for a power shoulder, Tron is know for his use of fabrics and draping on the feminine form. His Fall 2025 collection featured a combination of ruching and gathering fabric to create body skimming silhouettes.

I would probably be more likely to wear this look from his Fall 2024 line.

An important caveat here is to note that often designers blend their own styles with the codes of a brand. Tron will not just make Balmain the new Atlein. He will take is understanding of draping and fabric and the female form and apply that to the essence of Balmain. Expect him to bring in additional design elements and shapes, expanding on what he’s done.
When he debuts his first show in March, there may not be a huge departure from what Rousteing did. He will largely be using the same team and wouldn’t want to completely alienate loyal customers. But, given this is yet another new designer in charge for fashion week, I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s got.
