Louis Vuitton tried to buy a city (sort of)

Today in bizarre news, I found out that town in France tried to sell its name to Louis Vuitton. For a mere 10,000 euros, Vendôme was willing to officially give the rights to its name to the megaluxury house. Now, the only full articles not behind a paywall about it are in French. Thus, you’ll have to forgive me if I have some of the details confused.

The short story is that a court cancelled the sale for “excessive power.” Though a municipality has the right to do as it wishes with its property (including names), it didn’t go through the right means to properly evaluate the name and how much it should cost monetarily. The long story is, “How do you even get to wanting to sell you own name? And for just 10,000 euros?”

The Vendome bag in question is priced at $5,900.

This bomber jacket I fell in love with when I promise I was just going on the site to do research is $7,000.

With the sale of just two bags or two articles of clothing, they would recoup the cost of the naming rights. Shouldn’t the heritage of a town be worth more than that?

This is very much a rabbit hole I could likely fall into, especially with all the translation that would be required to understand this case. But what are your thoughts on this? How much do you think the name of your hometown is worth?
