I’m glad I visited the Superfine exhibit at The Met

I went to New York for one reason only. I wanted to visit The Met to see the Superfine: Tailoring Black Style exhibit. I had been planning for this moment as soon as I learned the theme for the Met Gala. I set about searching my calendar for an opening just to see it for myself. I finally made it happen.

There are many spaces on the internet where you can go to see pictures of what the exhibit contains. I will leave that to be better photographers out there. I will instead capture for you the feeling in the room. It was awe, it was joy, and it was validation. It was an act of storytelling, detailing how fashion was used to form identities and mount resistance. It was an even more so for parents to tell their children to look up and see their history and what they were truly capable of.

The exhibit was a celebration of Black men’s styles, across the diaspora, featuring archives from the Black men at the head of luxury fashion houses.  It was “just fashion,” and yet it was so much more. I regret not having more time to see and experience all there was on offer. Time is even more limited as the exhibit will close on October 26.

If you love fashion, art, history, Black culture, or just pretty things, there is something for you in this exhibit. I hope you are able to go and experience it for yourself.
