The Michelle Pfeiffer of fragrances

Scrolling along Sephora’s fragrance new releasees one day, I came across a brand that I had never heard of: Henry Rose. First and foremost, I am a sucker for a new release. Second, a person’s name as the name of the brand? Color me intrigued. However, Henry Rose is not the founder, but the inspiration.

Henry Rose is the project of Michelle Pfeiffer. Yes, that one, depending on your age Catwoman or that “white gold.” The brand started as the actress looked across the fragrance landscape and was unable to find an option that filled her needs. As more and more celebrities are doing, she decided to do it herself. Taking from the middle names of her two children, Henry Rose was bond.

A major release from the brand is Dave, their interpretation of a vanilla. The way this was pushed was “A Vanilla that is anything but “a vanilla.”

Dave eau de parfum

Middle: Lavandin, orange flower, almond blossom

Bottom:Vanilla bean Chantilly, cocoa shell, tonka bean

Now listen, let me be honest with you. It feels like, “I’m not like other girls,” but for vanilla fragrances. Is there something different than just vanilla? Yes, but that’s true for all of the vanilla fragrances on the market. There is no one-note wonder of a fragrance. But maybe my nose just can’t understand all the nuances.

Personally, with my nose, it was not as groundbreakingly different as it was presented to me as. It smelled good. It was vanilla. After spritzing myself, someone walked into the room, remarking how good it smelled in there. But I didn’t find a vanilla to kick all others out of my collection. But maybe I just don’t understand nuance.

Then I tried Flora Carnivora

$120 for 50 mL

Top: Orangeflower water absolute, neroli blanc

Middle: Jasmine absolute sambac, tuberose accord

Base: Cedarwood, vetiver, musk, amber

I expected this to be more of a maneater fragrance. Or dirtier, as a connection to the Venus Fly Trap’s favorite scent to attract it’s prey. In short, I assumed I wouldn’t like it. But I do.

I don’t know what it is about it. Maybe it’s just a well rounded bright floral. It pays tributes to flowers without smelling like an overwhelming flower market or underwhelming my leaning on sweet scents for femininity. I really like it. No one remarked on the scent as I wore it,  but it’s one of those situations where I don’t need compliments as confirmation. I know I smell good. I just want you to admit it. Do I need to invest in a larger size? Is this going to be part of my rotation?  Perhaps there is something sultry about it, because here I am still thinking about it and wanting more.

Luckily for me and you, Henry Rose offers a discovery set to try all of their fragrance without committing to full size or trying to find a retailer that carries the brand in-store. If you are interested in “clean” fragrances, let that be your next purchase.
