Remember Book It?

I was an avid reader as a child. I like to think that it was because I enjoyed getting carried away into a new world, like in the series of books by Lloyd Alexander. Books like The First Two Lives of Lukas-Kasha and The Book of Three transported me into fantasy lands where I used my imagination to create scenes so vividly that I still remember those details now. Or maybe it was because I really like pizza.

Like many an American child since 1984, I was enrolled in the Book It Program, an initiative by Pizza Hut to get kids reading more. After you had documented a set amount of books read, you were rewarded with a personal pan pizza and a snazzy pin. Oh, and let’s not forget the bubbly stickers used to track progress on that pin.

Today, the program has evolved with the times. Now, for the first time parents can enroll their kids (kindergarten through 6th grade) in the program over the summer months via their new app. Once the child has met the parent dictated reading goal, the coveted pizza coupon will be awarded. I can’t remember the last time I went to Pizza Hut, but this news has me feeling nostalgic right now. I am in a way happy to see my beloved program continuing for the next generation. If you are interested in starting a Summer of Reading using Book it with your child, check out their website for more details.
