After Demna comes Pierpaolo. To be exact, Pierpaolo Piccioli, former creative director of Valentino has assumed the post at Balenciaga. And now I am so excited for the next fashion week.
Under Demna’s leadership, Balenciaga became known for being avant-garde in some people’s telling. But in the eyes of others, it was cheap, money grabs, and disrespectful. Think of the uproar in the face of the towel skirt and trash bag purses. But, that kind of image drew in particular people. There is a community. I wonder what Piccioli will do with that.
How will he continue to have fun with the brand, as he applies his own aesthetic? How will he increase respect for the brand and overall sales? How will he maintain a distinct Balenciaga look and feel without losing commercial appeal?
It is clear that Piccioli was brought in to turn the brand around, similar to how he was perceived as doing for Valentino. Kering will want to see sales jump as a result of him taking the position. But can he do that and how long does he have to try? With an expected slowdown in luxury purchases due to global economic upheaval, he has a long battle ahead to win consumer spend. But in any case, I look forward to seeing the next designs to come.
