Your yearly reminder: Don’t forget the sunscreen

I’m writing this right before Memorial Day in the U.S., the unofficial start to summer when people will be outside much more regularly. Swaths of people will emerge from their months of remaining indoors and start laying by the pool, grilling all day, and of course playing pickleball and other games just to extend their time in the sun. That also means it is time for your yearly reminder: Wear your sunscreen.

And of course you will have multiple excuses.

“But I don’t like sunscreen. It makes me look too greasy.” Wear a mineral sunscreen or one with a matte finish.

“But sunscreen gives me a white cast.” Use a chemical sunscreen.

“But I don’t trust chemicals.” Wear a sunhat and UV protective clothing.

“But I don’t like clothing.” I guess stay inside. I don’t think I can help you with that.

The point is that there are options for you, and your excuses are dwindling every year as we get more innovations. If you are investing in your skincare, putting time and money to fight hyperpigmentation and skin aging, then you should be investing in suncare. Every. Single. Day.

It is easy to remember to put on sunscreen before you head out to the water park for a special occasion. However I beg you to also remember apply your sunscreen anytime you plan to intentionally be in the sun for hours and everyday. Even your daily commute puts you out in the sun. Unless you are  deep in winter in the Midwest and are only traveling through tunnels to get everywhere, your skin is always getting some exposure to the sun. So please remember your sunscreen.
