Demna’s own award show outfit: A plain black T

He received an amazing honor, and yet here I am focused on his outfit. Demna, creative director at Balenciaga, was awarded the he decoration of Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the Ministry of Culture in France. To receive his reward, Demna showed up wearing a plain black t-shirt and black pants. A very casual look for a very elevated occasion.

It feels out of place, but it is entirely on brand. Demna has become infamous for his designs, that many people consider a waste of money. A bag that looks like a plastic grocery shopping bag, a skirt that looks like a towel wrapped hastily after a shower. He takes the everyday things and elevates them to be part of a luxury brand. He’s been awarded for showing the art in the everyday and subverting the luxury category. Why would he show up any different?

Instead of being critical of Demna, it is good reflection for me. Why do I believe that the outfit needed to “match” the occasion? Why, when it was his art that earned him the reward would his outfit even matter? But that goes for me, too. How can I focus on growing into my own personal style, my own expression, instead of considering how the way I dress can fit a standard? Clothes are important, but what is it that I want them to say?
