Today is Halloween. Depending on where you live, this marks a day where you will see many people, young and old parading around in costumes. And then, just by looking at them, you are expected to guess who they are. Based on the mask, the clothing, the makeup, you have clues. The more outlandish, the more creative the costume is the better because those details help to tell the story. But what if I told you that you could do that all year long?
Halloween does not have to be the only day we get to have fun with clothes and make up. Halloween can’t be the only day that we allow ourselves to express our character. You could allow yourself to have fun with how you dressed on November 1, April 23, and every day of the year. Playing with different ways to express your creativity and interests through style doesn’t need to be relegate to just that one day or month where jack o’ lanterns abound. You are always playing a character with a major role in this world. You are already a particular person. How do you want to tell that story through your appearance?

This message is probably more for me than you. Full disclosure, I write this as someone who thought, “On Halloween I think I might wear some eyeliner.” Seriously. I am taking inspiration from all of the colorful mermaids, dirty pirates, and dragons. I’m enjoying watching everyone have fun with clothes to tell a story or communicate a message. It is time to start developing my personal costume wardrobe. How can I find ways to dress more like “me” all year long?
