The other day this icebreaker question popped up on the screen at the meeting: If you were given $10 million to do any job in the world, regardless of your skill set, what would you do?” I immediately thought, I’d be a travel writer. Sorry, let me be more specific. I would be a professional reviewer of hotels. Truthfully, I have a growing list of hotel properties and destinations that I want to explore. The new addition to the list is the Populus Hotel in Denver.
Populus is referred to as the first carbon positive hotel in the U.S. That means going beyond carbon neutral and not adding to the problem. Instead, it was designed in such a way to be a solution, to essentially absorb the carbon emissions in the air.
The name and design of the building is an homage to the Aspen trees that grow throughout the state. The name pulls from the Latin name for the tree, Populus Tremuloides. The property is designed to mimic the characteristic patters on the tree trunks. The attention to brining nature into the hotel continues in the use of the neutral color palette and natural materials. There is an extensive list of their environmental stewardship commitments on their site.
I’m drawn to the idea of a hotel that in some way is making the world a better place. I am a sucker for an environmental pledge, but I am also a shrewd critic of hotel offerings. I would love to visit the property, stay for some time and really experience how the promises to nature are upheld and incorporated into the service experience. Especially after having stayed at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, I would like to see how the concept of an environmentally conscious hotel is translated this time into the luxury experience.
If this were my job, I would have packed up and booked into this newly hotel immediately. But alas, that is not the case. But maybe you have some upcoming travel to Denver planned. If so, maybe consider a stay Populus Denver and let me know what you think.
