A few things to know before visiting the Glyptotek in Copenhagen

If you are a museum geek, you can rest assured that Copenhagen has plenty of options for you to fill your itinerary. But if you are an art history geek in particular, you need to make sure you head to the Glyptotek. While I think you should go an explore the collections yourself, here are some things you might want to know in advance.

  1. The art is largely European, but- While much of the collection is from France, Denmark, and the Mediterranean, there are some pieces from some African countries. In particular, there is currently an exhibit of Egyptian mummies and some recreations of artwork in the permanent collection.
  2. This is the place for you if you are Degas fan- There is a collection of his works, including his work on horses and the little dancer.
  3. There are contemporary exhibits as well.- While I was there, they had an exhibit by Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme called “The song is the call and the land is calling.” This was a joint installation in partnership with the contemporary museum of art.
  4. There is a student rate- This is a discount for not only students with a valid ID but for those 27 years and younger. Take advantage of it if you can.
  5. You should wear your walking shoes- the collection is massive. You will literally be walking for hours, only then to have to walk back to your hotel or transit. Support your feet accordingly. I did not and paid dearly for it.
  6. You should come ready to explore fearlessly- That is more for me, but because of the nature of the art on display, there will be people taking pictures of everything. Be sure to let yourself fully experience the art in the moment instead of being worried about getting out of the way of someone’s perfect shot.  I will now unapologetically share my perfect shot.
