When you walk into Fairground Coffee in Minneapolis, you will enter a fun, lighthearted theme coffee shop. After winding past the sitting area and into the line, you will notice small elements that are nods to carnivals. The swing set and décor is fun, but the shop doesn’t take theme into overdrive on the menu. There will be seasonal drinks and artisanal roasts, and some funnel cakes, but it doesn’t become overly sweet and childish.

I loved the aesthetic and made sure to come back a second day. Both times however, I walked my iced drinks back to my hotel. Of course, heat plus ice plus time is going to water down a beverage. But my sandwiches were delicious. I got the Bacon Egg and Cheese. I don’t remember what I ordered the next day, but it was good.

If you can’t (or won’t) get to Minneapolis, there are more locations around the country. And while I love a non-chain, independent shop, I appreciate that the name Fairground, is also a nod to their commitment to fair business practices. And that is certainly something I can get behind.

If you looking for a coffee shop with a little whimsy, check out Fairgrounds.
