Tom Ford’s creative director is out. Here is the big lesson in that.

Yet another change at the head of tom Ford. Peter Hawkings, who took the creative Director role after the departure of the brand founder, is now on his way out. This is just yet another major luxury brand this year this position without a creative director.  It could easily be seen as there is something in the water. Or that brands are just sacking people left and right to try and make sales. But that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

As reported by WWD, possible reasons for the exit include lack of chemistry with the design team and perhaps a lack of risk-taking. The last one is really sticking with me. His first collection was a sigh of relief that the codes of the house of Tom Ford would not completely be set aside. His line was a continuation of what came before. Instead of it being celebrated, it was part of the reason for his downfall.

Taking a lesson from this, I would say that playing it safe can actually be quite dangerous.

It is scary, but we have to take risks and innovate instead of just sticking to what came before. Our creativity requires us to try new things and be original. We can’t just stick the same things we have always done. Take a leap and try that new thing. It’s a risk, but so is trying to remain the same.
