The South Slope Cheese Co. in Asheville, North Carolina is now probably on the list of my wallet’s most horrifying nightmares. I cannot be trusted in any grocery store, let alone a specialty one. But pardon me, it is not a cheese shop; it is a fromagerie. They sell a selection of not just award-winning artisanal cheeses, but they also had packaged vegan cheese to satisfy everyone with your next charcuterie board. Speaking of, they did also have a selection of cured meats, too, and what I can only describe as perhaps the best version of a grown up Lunchable I have ever seen.
I did buy some extra creamy gouda after getting a sample, but I was mostly taken by the packaged food section. There was of course an extensive wine section in that small shop, because obviously wine and cheese are running mates. There were some bougie potato chips and crackers and an abundance of seasoning, preserves, and honeys. I ran amok in that place and picked up chips from the brands Torres and Jose Andres, which I had never seen before in any grocery store I have ever visited, some pepperoni and chorizo, a couple of bottles of rosé, mushroom salt, and hibiscus syrup. I can’t be trusted in any grocery store, let alone a specialty grocery store. I felt some financial shame as I walked out with a large bag, but I regret none of it.
The only bad thing about the shop is that it is located in a downtown area. It took several trips around to find parking that would not lead to us being towed. But even then, I would circle that area just to go back and visit them again.
If you are a lover of fine foods and find yourself in Asheville, I highly recommend you visit the South Slope Cheese Co.
