Jo Malone’s Myrrh and Tonka cologne intense lives up to the name

Intense. I took that with a grain of salt given the way I have heard many a fragrance review talk about Jo Malone fragrances. “They don’t last,” they say. So, I thought nothing of spraying on the sample of their Myrrh and Tonka intense cologne. As soon as the spray hit my skin, I feared I had made a mistake.

Myrhh & Tonka cologne intense

$220 for 100mL

Notes: Lavender, myrrh, tonka bean

The notes seemed like a true cologne, with the lavender coming through very strong on me. My fears were rooted in thinking this would not be the kind of scent that others around me would receive well as I went about my day. I mean, I wasn’t even sure how I felt about it on myself. Maybe it was too masculine? I didn’t notice any of the sweetness of the other notes to round it out. I was conscious of the scent as I sat for hours of computer work. The scent was ever present and I was waiting for the moment it would die down. Finally, I stopped noticing it and could stop being so self-conscious.

Hours after applying it in the morning, the scent came back to haunt me during my workout. I could smell the scent start to rise up as my body heated up. How would the other gymgoers perceive it? It is not exactly a gym friendly scent. Luckily no one seemed to notice, or at least they said nothing to my face.

I would consider this scent to lean more masculine. Unless you’re the type of person who stays in a suit, I wouldn’t consider an everyday kind of scent. It feels formal to me. And of course, the longevity and projection were great. So if you put it on in the morning, it will probably still be going strong for you dinner date in the evening.

My final verdict is that if you are fan of the Jo Malone fragrance house but were one of those who bemoaned the lack of longevity, you will find an answer for that problem in the intense line. And even better if you are looking for a more traditionally masculine leaning scent from the house.

Personally, I will be looking in to the other scents from the Cologne intense line to see if I can find a favorite. (I’m looking try the Red Hisbiscus and Velvet Rose and Oud next.)
