Are luxury advent calendars worth the money?

Last year, Jackie Aina disappointedly opened the doors of the $3000 Dior advent calendar, designed by Pietro Ruffo. Her disappointment went viral. The online community also chimed in, laughing at the disrespect of tiny sample sized products. The common refrain was that for that much money, the company should be ashamed.

Yes, $3000 is a lot of money. Yes, the products were smaller than full sized for the most part. But was that advent calendar, or any luxury calendar for that matter, a bad value? A poor use of money? Maybe. It depends.

In the case of last year’s La Collection Privée Calendar, multiple things factored in to the price. The calendar itself was handcrafted in limited quantities. It is made out of wood, whereas most other calendars are cardboard. That means that if you really wanted to, you could keep the calendar in your home, reusing it every year, and get the value out of it that way. The items inside are part of a premium collection from a luxury brand. That is going to be more expensive. And also some of the price is due to the novelty of it all. You can decide if you are happy spending $3000 on a wooden box that contains various fragrances.

While the Dior calendar is definitely at the top of the price range, there is a wide range of advent calendars to choose from, ranging from premium to extremely inexpensive. But regardless of the price, none of them will be worth it for you, if don’t value what’s inside. Let me explain.

Maybe you are interested in an advent calendar because you really want to open the individual doors day by day, getting a little surprise as you countdown to Christmas. Then maybe it will be a good value. But a luxury calendar and enjoy a little moment of priceless happiness.

Or maybe your main reason for getting an advent calendar is because you want a good return on your investment. You run the calculation, “They say it only costs $125, but the products are worth $250. That’s like saving $125.” If that is why you choose calendars, there are some calendars that will help you with that. But even then, do you agree with the suggested retail value of the items as they are listed? Do you like all of the products inside?  If this is how you’re thinking about it, I would tell you to avoid the advent calendar and just focus on buying value sets. Value is in the name after all.

How ever you assign value to these things, you can make the decision for yourself. Do some research about what’s out there and find an option that fits your tastes the best. Before you go and spend money on a calendar this year, really think through what you want from it and evaluate if it can fulfill that for you. If not, it will definitely be a waste.
