Quick thoughts on Tam Dao by Diptyque

Tam Dao and I have an off/on relationship. Sometimes, I think to myself, yes let’s definitely wear this Diptyque fragrance. Other times it’s, oh no, definitely don’t do that. And it’s not you, Tam Dao, it’s me.

To call it a woody fragrance would be too simplistic yet completely true. It smells like freshly cut planks of wood. Go mentally to your high school woodworking shop, make it much more premium and luxe, and breathe in. Probably not the image you want for your fragrance of the day, me neither, but I don’t hate it.

Tam Dao eau de parfum

$220 for 75 mL

Key notes: Sandalwood, cedar, cypress, coriander

I applied Tam Dao to skin at roughly 7 AM, it was still going strong at 9:28 AM. I didn’t remember to continue to check for it throughout the day. The fragrance was strong on my skin. I didn’t have to work hard to smell it. But I’m not sure about how it projects. And to be honest, I’m sure I would want it to.

This is the kind of fragrance that makes me self-conscious. It’s the type of scent that people don’t often wear when the want to smell good. My fear is that I will walk into a room, well fragranced, and people would think (after sniffing aggressively), “What is that? Does anyone else smell that?” Sometimes I want to steer clear from something overly floral and don’t want to smell at all edible. But is it too different?

I am going to continue to play with this scent, layering it with others, and really get to know it on my skin. If you are in the hunt for a woody fragrance, give this one a try.
