While I was out in the Dominican Republic, I waded out into the water. I let the waves crash into me as I reflected on the beauty of the water and fought to balance myself. I didn’t spend much time in the water, or nearly as much as I would like to have because I had a full itinerary. I walked back across the sand, flip flops in hand, and then went to rinse off the sea.
Later back stateside, I noticed how smooth my skin was. Gone were my scaly elbows. My feet were immaculate. My hair felt softer and more hydrated. My face remained hydrated, with the same products that were lackluster before. “The beach is the best pedicure,” was what someone said to me early in the trip. I didn’t go to the beach with this is mind, but it felt true. Why was that?

If you search why ocean water is so good for your skin, you will find multiple articles discussing the benefits such the exfoliating action of the sand and the waves, the detoxing properties of the sea, and the benefits of the trace minerals found in ocean water. The internet is full of that information. You don’t need that repeated here.
For me, I think the beach was so good because the benefits were inescapable. I didn’t have to figure out how I would work a trip to the spa into my schedule and budget. I didn’t have to research what to use to get result. And more importantly, I couldn’t continue to postpone treating myself better. It was easy and enjoyable. But most importantly, it was effective. I think that is how I should approach body care moving forward.
I want to look into how to recreate the benefits of ocean water at home. But I think more importantly, I want to think more about how I can make caring for my body simpler and yet more effective.
