Are eye creams a scam?

Last week I wrote about trying an eye cream from Cle de Peau. I really liked it, but at its price, I need to really consider whether not it’s worth it. (It probably is, but that’s not the point.) If you’re like me, you have probably heard some person somewhere say that eye creams aren’t worth the money. Maybe it was a dermatologist turned influencer who told you that all you need really need is moisturizer. Just rub that all over. But then again, there are multiple beauty brands who would resoundingly say the opposite, that eye creams are absolutely necessary, buy ours. As it often goes, truth lies in the middle.

The truth is that, yes, you can of course just put your moisturizer on your undereye area. Your house your rules, so do what you want. If the cream you have addresses your issues, have it. But eye creams are formulated to address the key issues that people have concerning the area. With ingredients targeted towards wrinkles, undereye circles, and puffiness, these products get straight to issues while you face cream addresses the rest of your face.

The thing that “moisturizer everywhere” people tend to forget is that undereye area is right next to your eye. Anything you apply near your eye can affect your eye.

That might seem ridiculous to write, but it bears stating. Eye creams are formulated to be suitable for the thinner more sensitive skin of the undereye area. They leave out fragrances, swap in specific ingredients to address your concerns, and reduce the concentrations of some active ingredients that could be irritating.

So, yes you can continue to just rub your moisturizer all over your face if you haven’t had any issues doing so. And even as expensive as they are, eye creams are designed to serve a purpose. That said finding a moisturizer or eye cream that meets your needs takes research and trial and error. If you don’t want to invest in eye creams don’t. But if you are looking to invest in an eye cream, know that it’s not a scam. Just do your research to find the formulas that are best for you.
