On frog clutches and fearlessness

I just saw a clutch from JW Anderson. And I thought it was ridiculous. Maybe you do too. It is a 3D printed plastic frog. I mean looking at it, it looks like the model is walking around town with a pet frog. And I laughed out loud, literally, when I saw how it opens. All your little trinkets, except your oversized phone, fit inside the amphibian’s mouth. Yes, it’s ridiculous. Yes, it’s “fashion.” And I wish I had the courage it would take to walk around town with that purse.

Frog Clutch

$990

I am not saying that I necessarily like the design of the item, but I do envy the kind of fashion fearlessness it takes to own and sport such a thing. Meanwhile, I am trying to learn to develop my own sense of style but am restricted by fears of what others might think.

I can’t imagine what it might be like to go to the grocery store and nonchalantly take your credit cards out of the mouth of a frog. Or to casually pull out your keys from the clutch while chatting in the pickup line. Or to visit your family unconcerned by their side eyes as they look upon your new bag.  I want to spend more time living my life that unapologetically.

It would be all too easy to reduce the frog clutch, or fashion generally, as something vain. I think that would do a disservice to the creativity and artistry behind the design. A bag like that inspires me to want the freedom to wear exactly want I want to wear, without constantly worrying about what people will think. And then to have that kind of courage in all aspects of my life.
