Black is the new green, Nike uses algae ink for a more sustainable sneaker

Nike’s newest collab with Billie Eilish, their Nike Alpha Force Low X Billie Eilish, will feature ink derived from algae. Often, black pigments are developed using petrolatum. However, the black ink, created by Living Ink, was developed using algae waste, making it a more sustainable option.

Nike has been expanding its use of more ecofriendly components in its shoe design. In particular, their previous collab with Eilish featured leftover materials from the last iteration. This step of moving towards more sustainable inks continues their path towards a more ecofriendly operation and fits into the greater industry wide trends. It remains to be seen whether and how these inks can be expanded to other pigments to “green” their entire line, regardless of the shoe color.

The Alpha Force Low X Billie Eilish is set to go on sale August 7.
