Finally, it has arrived, the first show from Mr. Pharell Williams as the new creative director from Louis Vuitton menswear.

The show began with a recorded conversation between Jerrod Carmichael and Henry Taylor about goals.

The designs featured camo, in a Minecraft-like pixelated style. Similar blocking was found on jeans. It reminded me of the jeans I wanted to buy as a teenager.
It seems that the group have tried to stay true to what Virgil Abloh had done with the brand prior. The clothes were fun, but more importantly there was a specific focus to incorporate Black culture and artists into the show, through the intergenerational conversation at the start, the inclusion of a gospel choir, and use of Henry Taylor’s work as clothing details.

And of course, hip hop was front and center with Pharell’s music production, the invited guests sitting front row, and with Clipse walking the runway.

When interviewed in the run-up to the show, Williams said that while he is head of menswear, he designs for humans. This is likely why female models, Liya Kebede, were so intentionally included in the show. You don’t have to be a man to wear these clothes.

This was spring/summer, but there were richly saturated colors. I’m especially thinking of this bomber jacket.

Pharell came out for his bow wearing his version of a camo suit, and he hugged his family who were dressed in the same look.
I enjoyed the show, and I look forward to seeing the upcoming seasons. I especially look forward to seeing how Pharell will make the line his own.
