Before you book that international trip, here are some more things you should budget for

So you are thinking about going on an international trip. You’ve saved up and are ready to buy that plane ticket and book the hotel. But let me tell you, there are some more expenses you may not have thought. Here is a list of things you may need to add to your budget.

  • Passport- This is step one. Do you need to get one or renew yours? And if you need it expedited, that will cost even more.
  • Visa- Even if you have an American passport there are still some countries you will need a visa to visit. Among those are the popular destinations of Australia, Ghana, and Nigeria. In addition to paying for the visa itself, you might also have to pay processing fees and for travel to a consulate if there is not one near you.
  • Vaccines- At least six weeks in advance of your trip, you will likely need to get yourself vaccinated. Generally, you should make sure you are up to date of typical vaccines, but you may also need some specific to the area you will visit. You check the requirements here. If you are going somewhere tropical, this can run you in the hundreds of dollars.
  • Luggage- If you need a new suitcase or travel bag, that will cost you as well.
  • Transportation: How will you get to and from airport? How will you get around the city? You should consider whether you will be paying for a pass on public transit, car services, or I suppose some walking shoes.
  • Food- Yes, you know you need to eat when you get there, but what about when traveling? Will you be buying meals at the airport or will you pack some snacks? The same for water and drinks.
  • Sun care- You might need to buy some sunscreen, hats, or protective clothing depending on the climate of your destination.
  • Bug Spray- If you are traveling somewhere tropical, you are going to want to have this on hand. Also consider if you need to provide your own mosquito netting.
  • Regional specific clothing- Do you need a bathing suit? Are traveling to a country with more modest dress? Do you need a specific type of shoe?
  • Medicines- It is a great idea to have some traveler medicines on hand for stomach issues and allergies.
  • Phone- How much will it cost to add international calling to your current plan? Or will you buy a phone/sim card to use in country?
  • Souvenirs- Maybe you already thought about this, but remember a little something for to remember your fantastic trip.
