Dermaplaning. Maybe you have heard of it. Maybe you have already done it and are a pro at this yourself. In either case, I was not familiar with it, until I decided to try the products here today.
I got suckered in to trying the Stacked Skincare dermaplane tool during a sale. It had been in my cart. Why not go ahead when I had the discount? But then I thought, does it make sense to start with a $70 tool when you’ve never done this before? So I decided to use the Sephora Collection version first.
The Sephora set is $12 and comes in a resealable bag with four razors of different colors. Each has a protective cover for when the blade is not in use.
My first time using it, I had vaguely remembered watching videos before to learn the technique, so I went for it without a refresh. I will say that I don’t recommend you do that. Make sure you learn how to use it the blade by watching the material provided by the brand and other content.
I held my skin taut and took short strokes. I didn’t have any issues, but it was a little disturbing to see all the little hairs that were being shaved off. I know that I am a mammal and thus hair covered, but that was odd. Still is odd. Because the process can be a bit irritating, I treated my skin as if it were sensitive right after. I personally didn’t put any active ingredients or use anything harsh on my face as the next step in my regimen that day.

When I used the Stacked Skincare, the blade seemed sharper. I will say that someone had left a negative review because they cut themself. I thought that was silly and “a you problem,” since it supposed to be sharp. But, I definitely got a little carried away and cut my chin. So be careful.
Here is the comparison- They are both blades, they both get the job done. Stacked Skincare notes that the size of the blade is big difference when using a premium blade. The main difference I notice is the presentation. The Sephora version is made with a plastic handle and is designed to be disposable. The Stacked Skincare version is designed so that that handle is made out of aluminum and the blades are replaceable. It is the more sustainable option. However, I must admit that the Sephora site carries a replaceable blade version. It is cheaper than the Stacked Skincare line, but multiple people have complained that trying to replace the blade is difficult. I haven’t gotten to the point where I need to replace the Stacked blade yet.
I personally think both product worked well for me as a novice. I would say you can start with either as you try to learn the practice. But if you are anything like me, maybe start with the cheaper option as a gateway. I believe that using them more regularly will help me tell the difference. My inability to really tell the difference is likely due to my ignorance in this area. I am going to learn some more about this process generally and tell you more about it in the future.
