I tried Exfolikate from Kate Somerville on two separate occasions. Both times I started by washing my face with Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser, and then finished off by applying my Tatcha Dewy Cream. Okay, let’s dive in now.
The first time I used this product, I put on probably two pea sized amounts. I thought it would be fine for me to use this exfoliant. After all, it seemed like pretty fine grit, nothing too rough. I did have some acne, but I tried to avoid that area. I followed the directions: Massage for 30 seconds, let sit for 1 to 2 minutes. I just let it do its thing while I brushed my teeth.

ExfoliKate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatment
$98 for 60mL
AHA, BHA, fruit acids, and silica to exfoliate your skin to smoother finish
While the smell was pleasantly herbal and soothing, the process was not. I felt like the left side of face started to feel like it was heating up, like I had applied IcyHot too it. My cheeks, specifically in the space under my eye started to feel sensitive. As I was massaging the product around, the feeling was intensifying. Letting it sit didn’t make it feel better. After I washed it off, my cheek still felt sensitive. My face didn’t look red, but I could feel the warmth of my cheeks.
I took a break and waited almost two months to give this product another shot. My face was in some need of exfoliating. This time around, as I massaged the product, again my cheeks felt sensitive, but the feeling wasn’t as intense. I also opted to only let it sit for 1 minute. I didn’t feel like my cheeks felt irritated after washing it off, the way it did before.
In both situations, I didn’t think my face got dried out as a result of the product. My skin didn’t have any dry patches in the morning. (I get that sometimes with harsh products.) I will say my face felt smoother. It did its job.
What do I recommend? Not this product if you have sensitive skin. I personally had some varying experiences, with a more intense sensation on the first go round. The second time around I had been using better products for my skin which are likely making it more resilient. But with the combination of a physical exfoliant and chemical exfoliation, it can be a lot. Personally, I wouldn’t use this more than once a month on my face.
If you have more resilient skin and are looking for a exfoliating treatment that you can definitely feel working, give this one a go.
