Skylar fragrances review: Salt Air and Vanilla Sky

Skylar fragrances is a clean fragrance brand. They focus on hypoallergenic scents and do their best to manufacture their products and packaging in an eco-friendly way. I had the chance to try two of their fragrances: Salt Air, and Vanilla Sky.

Salt Air was pleasant. I don’t know what a seaweed note brings, I just know I kind of like it. There is no good way for me to describe the smell of this fragrance other than to say, I think I get the ocean vibe they were going for, without bringing in sunscreen notes that a lot of beachy fragrances do. It was more like a calm private beach instead of a crowded touristy spot. I will say that it was pretty tame my skin, and it didn’t seem to me to project out. Or at least no one said anything about smelling it. After 8 hours of wear, I could still smell it faintly on me.

Salt Air

$90 for 50 mL

Top notes: Italian Bergamot, Sea Salt, Seaweed
Middle notes: Cotton Blossom, Water Lily, Cyclamen
Base notes: Driftwood, Vanilla, Musk

The first day I wore Vanilla Sky, however, I instantly regretted spraying it on my skin first. I have no idea what caused it, but it smelled bitter on me. (In hindsight, I realize this bitterness was an issue that I had with Vanilla 28. Maybe there is a particular vanilla note that perfumers use that doesn’t work on me? Maybe it was the cappuccino note?) When I sprayed it on paper, Day 1 smelled nothing. I am pretty sure the first day, it was my sinuses that got in the way. Day 2, it smelled pleasantly like vanilla. Assuming it was something wrong with my nose before, I put a little dab of the fragrance on my skin. Ugh, still sharp. Later in the day, that sharpness faded away, but I felt self-conscious the whole day while I was out. I was glad it didn’t really project.

Vanilla Sky

$90 for 50 mL

Top notes: Bergamot Zest, Sweet Orange, Cappuccino
Middle notes: Pure Vanilla, Jasmine Grandiflorum, Cinnamon Bark
Base notes: Caramelized Cedar, Sheer Amber, Sandalwood

Do I recommend you try these fragrances? Yes, of course, try everything. Now, I prefer Salt Air to Vanilla Sky, but that might be specific to my body chemistry. If you are looking for a clean fragrance line, give it a try. If you are looking for a projection monster, something where it announces your entrance from the parking lot, this probably won’t be the line for you. And I definitely recommend you start with a sampler to try things out on your skin first.
