One person’s don’ts is another’s dos: My response to style “don’t” videos

If you have been lurking in pretty much any social media style community (YouTube, Tik Tok, Instagram, etc.), you will have come across “don’t” videos. The creator gives you a list of things you should never wear, that you shouldn’t wear, or just flat out, “Don’t.” I hate those videos.

When someone puts together a list like that, it is based on their opinion. It is a list of things they would never do. And when they provide the things you should do instead, it is just their favorite way of dressing. There is a creator I see do this all of the time. In my opinion, all of the don’t examples look better than the do’s. When I watch it, I think, “Yeah, I much preferred the thing you told me not to do.” Style is too personal to try and categorize things like that.

Now big difference, certain videos are teaching tricks to achieve a particular look. As examples, you could want to look like you have longer legs, minimize your bust, or appear curvier. With those particular goals in mind, there are certain ways of dressing that would serve your goal better. Or, if you want to match the current trends, there are certain things you should stop doing. But if you want to keep wearing what you’re wearing, go right ahead.

My original title for this post was, “Don’t tell me what to do,” but I thought that was a bit aggressive. At the end of the day, use all of these styling videos as inspiration for you to figure out what works best for you. It’s your style; own it.
