Victoria Beckham’s fashion line only now turned a profit, after 15 years?

Victoria Beckham was covered in a piece on the CNN Style. She had recently shown her collection at Paris Fashion Week. In the article, there is a line that says critics questioned the brand’s commercial viability. It only recently turned a profit. This made me think, “Really, a brand that has been around since 2008 is only now turning a profit?”

A quick Google Search brought up this quote from the blog Successful Fashion Designer: Most fashion brands don’t start to turn a profit until 3-5 years in. I am not a business owner. I don’t fully understand the ends and outs of these things. I imagine, that sometimes the company is generating revenue, but perhaps the company will increase employee salaries and count that as additional costs. But even still, how much determination does it take to work for 15 years to finally turn your business into a financial success? Even still, how much grit does it take do so as a celebrity who has to worry about image if things fail and can easily walk away?

Looking at higher end goods, it is easy to think that the people behind them are making so much money. Or that the organization is just rolling in cash. In reality that might not be the case. (Especially if you think of the new fashion school graduates who just started their lines.) I know there is a lot more beneath the surface that I don’t understand. I know there is a business side to fashion, beyond the fashion shows and even the visible marketing efforts. I want to know more about that.
