Dolce & Gabbana debuted their menswear line for Fall-Winter 2023/2024. It was just black, with pops of color from grey and white. To call them pops of color is a bit much. What I did notice was that they are continuing what I’ve noticed happening across designers. That is borrowing aesthetics from womenswear and doing it for men. In this show, like many others before, that included lace and sequins. But the more surprising element was the use of corsets and waist-trainers. (I suppose the appropriate word is girdle.) Even pants had extended and embellished waistbands.

Personally, I am not a proponent of wearing all black when it gets cold out. If it is already dreary, why add to it with my own wardrobe? Though I don’t have a favorite color, I find myself gravitating towards those that are deeply saturated or obnoxiously bright. Neons and jewel tones. I just like the idea of something that stands out and makes a statement, even if that changes everyday.
Bright colors were something that I came to associate with D&G. This is part of the reason I was so intrigued by the show. I kept waiting for the color explosion that never came. The designers say this is intentional. They called the line Essenza, or essence. These designs are them stripping it all back to the basics. What can be more simple than all black? Timeless, free from distractions, and focused on craftmanship.
The show made me rethink what I knew about the brand and how I might perceive it moving forward. I am eagerly awaiting the womenswear debut for that season. Will it have the same (lack of a) color palette?
