Amazon fighting counterfeits

On November 9, Amazon issued a press release, detailing their take down of three counterfeiting organizations. They were able to disrupt these operations, which were making fake luxury, automotive, and sporting goods and had acquired licenses that would have allowed to create fraudulent seller accounts on Amazon. As a result of this effort, 84 people were detained and 240,000 counterfeit items were confiscated.

In their release Amazon highlights their work with brands around the globe to crack down on counterfeits. Vice President of Amazon’s Worldwide Selling Partner Services, had this to say:

“There is no place for fraud on Amazon. The production and sale of counterfeit goods poses serious harm to the intellectual property rights of the brands involved, as well as to the legitimate interests of honest sellers—and the customers who place their trust in our stores. While we are proud of the progress we have made, we will not stop until we drive counterfeits to zero, and we will continue to invest and innovate until we get there.”

As a consumer, it is good to know that Amazon is actively working to address the issue of counterfeits on their site. The number of fake products on the site is certainly disconcerting and has been going on for a while. However, the reason for this large scale operation is the companies desire to lure more luxury brands to the platform. More on that coming up this week.

What are your thoughts on the problems with counterfeits and fake sellers on the site?
