APLs: I’ve worn them for a year, so here’s what I have to say

At some point, the NBA banned these shoes. APL, or Athletic Propulsion Labs, is a company that started out making performance shoes, which apparently could help you jump higher.I had no idea about that story. All I knew was that I needed a new walking shoe. I came across APLs on a retail site and thought, those’ll do. I ordered the Techloom Pro and the Techloom Breeze I couldn’t decide. Now after a year of wearing both styles, I think I am good to give a full functional review of the shoes.

Techloom Pro

$160

Their original shoe with patented Propelium for comfort and bounce

Out of the box and immediately taken on a 5 mile walk, the Techloom Pro held up. They were comfortable. Some might even say stylish. I wear these things regularly and haven’t had any problems with them. I also wore them out hiking, which was probably a mistake since my pair is very light off-white. I took the laces out and put them in the washing machine to clean them. They came out fine. There is still a bit of staining at the toe, but again it is all my fault for taking them on a great adventure. Clearly from that story, we learn the shoes are easy to clean and with the necessary flexibility to traverse a rocky path in the woods. My pain is your gain.

Techloom Breeze

$220

A sleek, lightweight running shoe

The Techloom Breeze I mostly wear as casual shoes. However, they snuck into a workout when I forgot my gym shoes. They are rather flat (low drop) so I had no problems doing a strength session in these and even a bit of running. Even though they feature laces, I enjoy the ability to slip them on and off easily. I walk around all day in them without an issue. Well, except something about the back bit is very noticeable at times. I can feel it against my tendon, and it irritates me. But I like the way shoe looks and fits otherwise. So, I’ll leave with it, since it is not consistently happening.

Sizing: It is highly recommended you size up a half size. That is not just my recommendation, that comes per the true size app you can use to find your right fit on their site. I typically wear a women’s’ 9 in Adidas and was instructed to get a 9.5. And it’s the perfect fit.

Would I recommend this brand? Absolutely. Personally, having grown up on Nike and Adidas, it took some bravery to try out a new brand. But I will say they have converted me. I am looking to buy these shoes I linked to replace my current shoes as they reach retirement. And as I was pulling the links for this post, I saw that they have some concept shoes which are tempting my budding sneakerhead tendencies.

If you haven’t checked out the brand, I highly recommend you given them a look.
