Brand Spotlight: Thebe Magugu- Highlights and Collaborations

Straight to the point, here is a roundup of the various collaborations and highlights I have discovered to date, featuring Thebe Magugu.

  • After contributing a faux ostrich coat to the 2018 exhibition, “Pink: The history of a punk, pretty, powerful color,” his contribution was placed in the permanent collection at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

  • In early 2020, he launched a capsule collection with 24S.
  • His work caught the eye of an American audience when his shoulderless red blazer from his African History collection was featured in a season four episode of the HBO show, Insecure.

  • His Girl Seeks Girl dress is now part of the permanent collection at the Met.

  • In 2022, he collaborated with Adidas to produce an African heritage inspired collection, that included gender neutral pieces, modest swimwear, tennis pieces, and takes on Adidas classics.
  • Magugu was invited to participate in the Love Brings Love show, in tribute to the late Alber Elbaz, founder of AZ factory.  He was then asked to be the first amigo designer of AZ Factory, in what will be a string of collaborations with various designers as the company re-imagines its future after the loss of its founder. There would be two drops one in June and another in September of 2022.

Other than pictures of beautiful clothes, why bring up these collaborations? 1. I personally think it’s interesting, so I am writing about it. 2. It seems to me that collaborations is a key point of growth for a designer. Magugu himself points to his experience with AZ Factory as one that allowed him to grown in resources and skills. But personally, I believe it requires a certain attention for designer to be able to take his own design approach and modify it to into the codes of the house he is working with.  I for one am excited to see how he continues to evolve his own brand as he continues to learn more from others in the industry.
