So, Adidas and Allbirds teamed up for some eco magic

Apparently, Adidas collaborated with Allbirds to create a performance shoe with the lowest possible carbon footprint. Pairing the athletic insight of adidas with the sustainability focus of Allbirds, this collaboration allowed them create something that was light, comfortable, and good for the planet. Throughout the process they focused on sustainability, using a Life Cycle Assessment methodology to calculate the emissions used throughout the entire life cycle of the shoe. This included the materials used in the shoe, the way they transported it, and advice for the end user.

First, they shoe was created using only natural and recycled materials. The designers began with the materials that would have the least impact and allowed them to inform the design. Rather than using plastics or synthetics to provide the structure, they used embroidery and lacing to give the shoe its shape and support. In addition, they combined the Light Strike from Adidas with the sugar cane technology of Allbirds in order to create a midsole that was both comfortable and ecofriendly.

They even thought of the box and the shipping methods. This included ensuring the box used only as much material as was necessary. And the product was then transported using vehicles powered by biofuel. For the end user, the companies encouraged them to wash the shoes by hand rather than by machine to further lessen its carbon footprint. And at the end of the shoe’s life, the consumer is encouraged to send it back for recycling, allowing it to be reused and remain out of the landfills.

The shoe itself has a carbon emissions rating of 2.94, much lower than other any other performance shoe on the market. I am so irritated that I missed the first announcement of this launch. The all white pair is sold out, but other colorways are available. Check it out on their site.
